Monkey King Fever Hits Hong Kong: Three Generations on One Stage

When Journey to the West meets Peking opera, a small stage plays out the whole of heaven, earth and everything between.

This article was originally written in Traditional Chinese. The English translation is provided for reference only.

Halt! Old Monkey is here!' The moment that famous line rang out in the Grand Theatre of the Xiqu Centre in West Kowloon, the house erupted in applause. The new Peking opera production Monkey King: Sun Wukong — Who Dares Challenge Me (《美猴王・孫悟空・誰與爭鋒》) has just completed its Hong Kong run. Built around the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, this feast of a national art form set the city alight from its very first appearance, playing to full houses every night and becoming one of the most talked-about cultural events in Hong Kong in recent months.

The run marked the first Hong Kong collaboration between the Chi Heng Foundation, which both presented the production and is its beneficiary, and the producer, the Trend Education Foundation. The performances were staged as a fundraiser, with all proceeds going to the Chi Heng Foundation to support the education of mainland children affected by AIDS. Chi Heng has long worked to provide education funding, practical support and care for psychological development to children on the mainland affected by AIDS, and to students affected by poverty, illness and discrimination.

Figures from Hong Kong's performing arts and cultural circles were invited to attend, and they spoke highly of both the artistic standard and the inventiveness of the staging. The celebrated writer and playwright Pai Hsien-yung offered his warm good wishes and encouragement. The media personality Chan To-on (陳圖安) said: 'I loved every scene in the piece. Tonight was the first time I have seen Sun Wukong on stage, and this time it brings a good cause and real entertainment together in one evening.'

Three Generations of Monkey Kings on One Stage

Chu Lu-hao (朱陸豪) serves as artistic director and appears alongside the rest of the cast in a succession of mythological roles. The gods do battle, scene after scene, with the monkey troops led by Sun Wukong — much to the audience's delight.

Chu Lu-hao is a well-known Taiwanese wusheng — the martial male role of Peking opera — and a screen actor, long regarded as the heir to the Monkey King tradition. Now 72, 'Taiwan's foremost Monkey King' takes the stage with young performers such as Hsu Ting-fang (徐挺芳) and Chin Lang (秦朗), creating the unusual line-up of three generations playing Wukong together. Breaking with convention, they have brought in more young actors and blended the martial craft of Peking opera with the aesthetics of contemporary theatre, to striking effect.

The most surprising moment comes when Sun Wukong pulls the Sea-Calming Needle from the ocean floor. A huge pillar rises high above the stage, then shrinks slowly through shifting light and shadow until it becomes the golden cudgel brandished in the Monkey King's hand — modern stagecraft and a classic set piece joined seamlessly, and quite thrilling to watch.

The Mighty Magic Spirit (巨靈神) delivers his lines in a mixture of Chinese and English, sending the children in the audience into fits of laughter.

From the twitchy, ear-scratching mannerisms of a monkey to the crisp routines with the golden cudgel, and on to the 'dwarf walk' (矮子功), crouching leaps, mid-air jumps and high somersaults — this is real kung fu, for which there are no shortcuts, only day after day of repeated training. Audience members left the theatre with admiration written on their faces.

Longtime opera fans pronounced it authentic and exhilarating, but the production also broke through the age barrier. Many young people and whole families came together; children watched enthralled, copying the monkeys' movements, squeaking and gesturing along. Some audience members had followed the show from Taiwan to Hong Kong, and many more were young people setting foot in a Peking opera theatre for the first time. Their reaction was unanimous: who knew Peking opera could be this good, this electrifying?

Art That Carries Feeling, Theatre That Joins Hearts

Monkey King: Sun Wukong — Who Dares Challenge Me is more than a fine performance; it is a moment of cultural resonance across regions. Sun Wukong is a cultural symbol shared by Chinese people everywhere, and this tour narrowed the cultural distance between the mainland and Hong Kong in the most vivid and moving way, letting the finest of traditional Chinese culture shine anew on the banks of the Fragrant Harbour. That the run also served a charitable purpose, using art to pass on care for others, gave this journey through a national art form an extra weight of meaning and feeling.

Bringing Peking Opera to a Younger Audience

The production does not confine itself to traditional Peking opera staging. While keeping the core themes of defying authority and seeking freedom, it conveys that spirit in ways closer to a modern audience, bringing young viewers nearer to a traditional art form.

Before the run, Chu Lu-hao visited schools to meet students, inviting them up to swing the golden cudgel and teaching them monkey-play movements in the school hall; amid the laughter, seeds of traditional culture took root. The company also appeared on the Avenue of Stars in Tsim Sha Tsui, striking Monkey King poses in front of the Bruce Lee statue while tourists lined up to take photographs — Peking opera stepping out of the theatre and becoming a talking point on the street. As Chu Lu-hao puts it: 'Peking opera is not a relic in a museum; it is a living art.'

The Spirit of Wukong Stays Alive

Why, after all these years, is Sun Wukong still a cultural figure loved by everyone? This production supplies the answer. The monkey who sprang from a cleft in the rock on the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit stands for the purest kind of defiance and constancy. He refuses to accept the fate heaven assigns him; for all the trials he endures, he never stops daring to challenge authority, and never forgets what he set out to do.

結語In closing

Time moves on, and the monkey plays of Peking opera live on upon the stage. The final curtain on Monkey King: Sun Wukong — Who Dares Challenge Me is not an ending but a new starting point for handing traditional culture forward. Having spent a lifetime perfecting the Monkey King's craft, Chu Lu-hao has passed his hard-won skills to his students Hsu Ting-fang and Chin Lang without holding anything back. The three of them playing Sun Wukong side by side shows both the vitality of traditional culture and the survival of the monkey play's most demanding techniques. This unusual piece of Peking opera has been one of the most affecting cultural sights in Hong Kong this spring.
