The Literary Code on Our Banknotes: Poetry and Beyond on the Hong Kong Dollar

From dim sum on the tea house table to the Cantonese opera stage, the back of every Hong Kong banknote holds a page of the city's literature and history.

This article was originally written in Traditional Chinese. The English translation is provided for reference only.

Who says banknotes are nothing but a symbol of filthy lucre? The backs of Hong Kong's notes carry the city's cultural DNA. From the Cantonese opera stage to fluttering butterflies, from the warmth of the tea house to the towers of the financial district, every Hong Kong dollar note is a miniature art exhibition — and a key that unlocks the city's literature and history. Today, let the banknotes be your tour guide through Hong Kong's world of ink and paper.

HK$20: The Warmth of Yum Cha

Design details: dim sum, a teapot, and the ritual of yum cha at a tea house.

Eileen Chang, Love in a Fallen City (《傾城之戀》): Bai Liusu and Fan Liuyuan meet in a tea house as the war closes in, and the everyday ritual of “one pot of tea and two dishes” becomes a romantic footnote to a world in chaos.

Huang Zunxian, “Reflections on Hong Kong” (《香港感懷》): “Fire-trees and silver blossoms blaze; felt robes and embroidered threads are spread out.” The late-Qing poet's picture of a teeming marketplace echoes the clatter of the tea house.

The star of the tea house table is the har gow, whose pleats are said to number thirty-two — more exacting than a sonnet.

HK$50: Butterflies and the Poetry of Nature

Design details: the tawny mime, the blue-spotted crow and the white dragontail.

The essay collection Hong Kong Hidden in Its Place Names (《藏在地名裏的香港》) writes of the butterfly valley on Tai Mo Shan, where “the wings beat softly like turning pages, shaking loose a whole ground of metaphors from the hills.”

The classical lyric “Qingping Yue: Sailing from Hong Kong by Night” (《清平樂·夜發香港》) gives us the line “the dragons murmur, clear as speech.” Butterfly and dragon are alike creatures of nature — a quiet hint at how alive Hong Kong's ecology is.

Are butterfly wings nature's own QR codes? Scientists tell us that every butterfly's markings are unique — rather like each person's writing style.

HK$100: Joy and Sorrow on the Cantonese Opera Stage

Design details: Cantonese opera characters, costumes and stage curtains.

Lilian Lee, Farewell My Concubine (《霸王別姬》): though set in the world of Peking opera, the novel's theme that the stage is life itself runs in the same vein as the rough, worldly spirit of Cantonese opera.

Liu Yichang, Tête-bêche (《對倒》): the rising and falling fortunes of its ordinary city dwellers play out like the sheng, dan, jing, mo and chou role types of a Cantonese opera aria.

一個眼神能演完《帝女花》半場戲!」Is a Cantonese opera performer's eye work stronger than AI? A single glance can carry half an act of Princess Chang Ping (《帝女花》).

HK$500: The Geopark's Code of Deep Time

Design details: the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark.

Leung Ping-kwan, writing as Ya Si, in “Questions and Answers on the Landscape of the New Territories” (《新界山水答問》): the jagged rocks are like broken bamboo slips and torn pages, and the waves are annotations the geologists have not finished writing.

The classical sequence “Ten Reflections on Hong Kong” (《香港感懷十首》): “Once the five giants had hewn it open, even this world of desire became a realm of immortals.” So Huang Zunxian saluted the grandeur of these geological wonders.

Are the hexagonal rock columns nature's emoji? The geometry of this volcanic rock is more symmetrical than a mathematical model.

HK$1,000: An Urban Fable in Glass and Steel

Design details: the Victoria Harbour skyline and the skyscrapers of Central.

Wong Kar-wai's film Chungking Express (《重慶森林》, inspired by Liu Yichang's fiction): the city is a forest of steel, and banknotes are the migratory birds passing through it.

Xi Xi, My City (《我城》): “the buildings stack up like toy blocks, and the neon is the city's punctuation” — a literary sketch of the modern metropolis.

半山自動扶梯每天運送8萬人,堪比《蜀道難》!Are Central's escalators busier than Li Bai? The Mid-Levels escalator carries 80,000 people a day — a climb worthy of “The Road to Shu Is Hard” (《蜀道難》).

Every time your fingers touch one, it is like turning the pages of a literary notebook: the joys and sorrows of Cantonese opera, the light dance of butterflies, the weight of the rocks and the neon of the city.

The next time you pull out a Hong Kong dollar note, slow down for a moment and read its lines of poetry and its far horizons. Let this miniature work of art stir the imagination in the middle of an ordinary day. And do tell us which note holds your favourite story, so that together we can pass Hong Kong's literary code on.
