This article was originally written in Traditional Chinese. The English translation is provided for reference only.

她給熱愛中文的同齡人們提出了哪些建議呢?"We should / should not sympathise with Ah Q." "The main responsibility for the generation gap lies with the older / the younger generation." "The drive to grow comes from dreams / from responsibility." These intriguing motions come from the 2024 Chinese Debate World Cup, where one ten-year-old primary pupil, on the strength of an outstanding performance, fought her way up round after round and, with her teammates, carried off the championship of the primary open division. What kind of Chinese-language training lies behind this model pupil — the sort every parent holds up as an example? And what advice does she have for others her age who love Chinese?

01 | A Title Once Won by Zhan Qingyun

On 13 August, the grand final and prize-giving ceremony of the 2024 Chinese Debate World Cup were held at the Tiantongyuan Culture and Art Centre in Beijing. Peking University beat the University of Oxford by four votes to one to lift the competition's championship trophy. In the school divisions, the youngest debater of all — ten-year-old Lu Yimeng — and her teammates, competing as Shanghai Youth Debate United III, took the championship of the primary open division.

Just how much is that title worth? Zhan Qingyun and Pang Ying, both familiar to audiences from the televised debate programme U Can U BiBi (《奇葩説》), won the overall championship of this same competition in 2018 representing a joint Harvard–Yale team, and were named Best Debaters in the final. For the junior secondary and primary divisions of the 2024 Chinese Debate World Cup, the organising committee invited Professor Mao Peiqi of the History Department at Renmin University of China, Professor Jin Canrong of Renmin University of China, and U Can U BiBi debaters Xi Rui and Luo Miao, among others, to sit as judges or attend as guests.

02 | The 'Oddball' Motion She Remembers Best

Looking back on the competition that had only just finished, Lu Yimeng could still barely contain her excitement when we spoke to her: "I'm so happy! All that brainstorming wasn't for nothing!" She told us that she and her teammates debated six rounds in all. Two of the motions — "The main responsibility for the generation gap lies with the older / the younger generation" and the final's motion, "The planning of historic towns should give greater weight to preserving traditional ways of life / to promoting modern economic development" — each came up twice, and the team came through every round to reach the championship stage.

When preparing a motion, Yimeng said, their teacher had the young debaters first write down every argument that came into their heads, then work out which ones would hold up and which would not. They would also call in what she calls the mysterious power of the modern age — AI — to help, and finally match the arguments to their supporting material and shape it all into a debate script.

Asked which motion left the deepest impression, Lu Yimeng answered almost before the question was finished: "We should / should not sympathise with Ah Q." "That motion really caught us off guard! The earlier ones were all fairly close to everyday life, whereas this rather oddball topic required debaters not only to know Lu Xun's original text inside out, but also to understand the background behind it." She, her teacher and her teammates spent a full day preparing for it. Although she was "nervous, really nervous" when she stepped up, thorough preparation and forceful argument carried them to victory in the end.

03 | First Study, Then Imitate, Then Make It Your Own

Lu Yimeng attends SISU Xiwai International School, a bilingual school affiliated with Shanghai International Studies University. She loves writing and has consistently kept up excellent results in Chinese — the fruit of the Chinese-language training she has had since she was small. Her mother says frankly that in raising her daughter she has great respect for the child's own temperament, while keeping a firm hold on the broad direction: "This is a child with a mind of her own. As long as the general direction is right, we support her."

In Primary Two, Lu Yimeng joined a recitation class, which laid a solid foundation for her powers of expression. In Primary Three she began to take up debating. Unlike recitation, which is a matter of "reading off the page", debating depends far more on "using your head — it trains you to think on your feet".

Of course, before you can think nimbly you have to take in a great deal of material first — classic university debate footage, recordings of your opponents, and so on. You begin by studying how the best performers do it, then train by imitating their approach, and in the end develop a style of your own. This method — first study, then imitate, then create — applies just as well to learning Chinese.

A Note from the Editor

Our half-hour interview went by quickly. Yimeng talked freely and easily, and her confidence and quick-wittedness left a deep impression on us. We hope she will one day have the chance to test herself against children in Hong Kong and to share with them what she has learned about studying Chinese.
