The Paris Olympics are drawing to a close, but the sight of our athletes in full flight remains vivid in the memory, and the stories that surround them are still on everyone's lips.
As things stand, the Hong Kong, China team of 35 athletes competing in Paris has taken home two golds and two bronzes — a fine showing by any measure.
We watched every event closely in front of the television and often traded impressions with those around us. What we were glad to notice is that, while the champions naturally take the glory, people are paying more and more attention to the effort that carried each athlete, step by step, to the Olympic stage.

She announced her retirement from competition a few days ago and is about to join the Jockey Club as an assistant manager for external affairs. We look forward to seeing where this first step into professional life takes her.
The Hong Kong Jockey Club is a world-class racing organisation committed to building a better society. It also takes a close interest in the development of sport in Hong Kong and gives generously to charitable and community causes, creating value for society at large.
Cheung Ka-long left school after Form Four to become a full-time athlete, but as his sporting career grew more settled he used the gaps in his schedule to make up the ground in his own education.
After winning gold in the men's individual foil at the Tokyo Olympics, he was admitted in August 2022 to Hong Kong Baptist University under its Elite Athletes Admission Scheme, reading Physical Education and Recreation Management in the Department of Sport, Physical Education and Health. Less than two months into term, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University conferred an honorary doctorate on him in recognition of what the 'god of the sword' has achieved in fencing.
Chan Nok-sze, known as Hong Kong's leading woman foil fencer, made history in her first Olympic outing this year by reaching the last sixteen. At nineteen, she is a student who excels in character and study alike — as accomplished with a book as with a blade.
Chan is a graduate of one of Hong Kong's best-known local schools, St. Paul's Co-educational College. Watching her win honour for Hong Kong in Paris was genuinely stirring: to balance study and sport is to endure setbacks and hardships beyond what most people could bear, and without passion and extraordinary resilience such results are simply out of reach. We wish Nok-sze every success in the contests still ahead of her.
At the Paris Olympics, Ian Ho set a new Hong Kong record in the men's 50m freestyle.
Ho's parents are from Hong Kong, but he was born and raised in the United States. Before the pandemic he was reading for a master's degree in engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University; he later chose to put his studies on hold and come back to Hong Kong to train.
