A Father's Love, Revisited in Literature

From Zhu Ziqing's retreating figure to Fu Lei's letters home and Yu Guangzhong's imaginary enemies — three passages, three kinds of fatherly love.

This article was originally written in Traditional Chinese. The English translation is provided for reference only.

Some say a father's love is as solid as a mountain — a mountain in the middle of a landslide: when there is no danger about, Dad is the greatest danger there is.

Some say the ones who used to pretend to be doing their homework turn out to be the very same ones now pretending to mind the children.

還有人説,寶寶生下來被爸爸當成健身工具,正是力與萌的完美結合,讓人忍俊不禁之餘,也讓人感受到爸爸那如山般的守護……And some say a newborn is really just Dad's latest piece of gym equipment — strength and sweetness in perfect combination. It makes you laugh, and it also lets you feel the mountain-like protection a father provides.

What is a father's love?

To us, a father's love is the figure Zhu Ziqing watched walking away — “that stout back, in a blue cotton-padded gown and a black cloth mandarin jacket”.

It is Fu Lei's encouragement and patient counsel to his son in his letters home.

It is the friction between Yu Guangzhong and his daughters' boyfriends — inevitable, and impossible to read without laughing.

Whatever form it takes, a father's love touches something in us whenever it is spoken of, and leaves behind a quiet, warming strength.

Father's Day Reading

He looked out of the carriage window and said, “I'm going to buy you a few tangerines. Stay here and don't wander off.” Beyond the railings of the platform opposite I could see several vendors waiting for customers. To reach that platform you had to cross the tracks, which meant jumping down and climbing up again. My father was a stout man, so getting across was bound to cost him some effort. I offered to go myself, but he would not have it, and I had to let him go.

I watched him, in his little black cloth cap, his black cloth mandarin jacket and his dark blue cotton-padded gown, walk unsteadily to the edge of the tracks and lower himself down slowly — that much was not too hard.

But crossing the tracks and climbing up onto the far platform was another matter.

He gripped the edge with both hands and drew his feet up after him; his heavy body tilted a little to the left, and the strain of it showed.

It was then, seeing him from behind, that my tears came streaming down. I wiped them away quickly, afraid he might see, and afraid others might see too. When I looked out again, he was already on his way back with an armful of vermilion tangerines.

To get across the tracks, he first set the tangerines down on the ground, climbed down slowly himself, then gathered them up again and walked on.

When he reached my side I hurried over to help him up. We walked back to the carriage together and he piled the tangerines onto my fur coat. Then he brushed the dust from his clothes, looking as though a weight had lifted, and after a moment said, “I'll be off, then. Write to me when you get there!” I watched him go. He had taken a few steps when he turned round, saw me, and said, “Go inside — there's nobody watching your things.” When his figure had merged into the crowd coming and going, and I could no longer pick him out, I went back in and sat down, and my tears came again.

The phrase “the heart of a child” is one I too have always kept in mind. A child knows nothing of loneliness; and a child who is lonely will create a world of his own, and many companions of the spirit!

Keep the heart of a child always, and you will never fall behind, however old you grow; you will always be able to meet, to understand and to embrace every other childlike heart under heaven!

That friend of yours is quite right: whatever moves us in an artistic performance comes from purity of soul. Unless one is as pure as a clear mirror, how can one enter into the hearts of those who came before? How can one move the hearts of an audience?

A raid on the letterbox is only the silent film of the war; that much I can bear.

In truth I would rather these lovestruck young men wrote plenty of love letters: at least it gives them practice in composition, and keeps their Chinese from going to seed in this age of audio-visual education. Far worse is when the telephone takes a hit. Those volleys of warning rings carry the battlefield from the letterbox outside the door into the heart of my study; the silent film turns into stereo sound, and the imaginary enemy has begun firing live rounds.

More alarming still is when the imaginary enemy actually breaks into the city and becomes a real enemy of flesh and blood, no longer something imagined for amusement — like a military exercise that halfway through turns into real fighting.

A real enemy is easy to spot. With one daughter running interference for him, he takes possession of a corner of the sofa, and from then on the two of them murmur and whisper together; even when they only gaze at each other, the atmosphere is too thick to disperse, and the whole household is left short of breath. By then the other sisters have long since withdrawn to a safe distance — anyone can see that something is afoot.

Should the enemy stay for dinner, the air grows tenser still, as though everyone had struck a pose in front of a camera. The dinner table, normally as noisy as a duck pond, becomes a mime show performed by four sisters; even the chopsticks and spoons seem to have got wind of it, and turn suddenly careful.

I know perfectly well that this presumptuous young man may not be the son-in-law fate has in store (who can say which of the eighteen transformations my precious daughter is passing through just now?), and yet a faint hostility rises in me all the same. I know too that a daughter is like a ripening melon, that one day she will drop from the stem and be gone — but I would rather she did not go with this self-satisfied boy in front of me.

We grow up little by little, and our fathers grow old little by little. To every father: good health, and a very happy Father's Day.
