Characters That Swim: Writing Games to Play with Your Child

Disappearing characters, invisible characters, characters that float — three little games that make writing Traditional Chinese something to look forward to.

This article was originally written in Traditional Chinese. The English translation is provided for reference only.

Last time we shared three tricks for helping young children recognise characters. This time we raise the difficulty a little and look at ways to strengthen their handwriting of Traditional characters.

Writing Chinese characters is hard work, and for children newly arrived in Hong Kong the Traditional forms are harder still. Writing games that are enjoyable and effective at the same time are therefore many teachers' and parents' first choice.

Game One: The Disappearing Character

You will need: paper and water.

How to play: the child dips a finger in water and writes a character they have already learned on the paper, and the parent guesses what it is. The moment the water dries, the character vanishes. The parent can pretend not to recognise it and, just as it is fading, ask the child to write it once more for another guess. Repeat several times: it gives the child practice in stroke formation and builds familiarity with the character.

Game Two: The Invisible Character

You will need: white paper, a white crayon and watercolour pens.

How to play: the child writes a character with the white crayon and the parent guesses what it is. Again the parent can pretend to be stumped, at which point the child colours evenly over the paper with the watercolour pens — the white character appears, and the answer is revealed. As before, it is writing the same character over and over that fixes it in the memory.

Game Three: The Swimming Character

You will need: a white plate, a dark marker pen and water.

How to play: the child writes a character on the plate with the marker pen, then water is poured in slowly from the rim — the character lifts away and floats on the surface. Pour slowly; characters with fewer strokes are more likely to work. During the game the child does the writing and the parent does the pouring. Because it is best to get the character right first time, the game also sharpens accuracy.

Fun, and easy to set up — why not try one today? Once a child is interested and willing to pick up the pen, there is little danger of them failing to learn.

A Note from the Editor

Reading characters well and writing them well are the groundwork of learning Chinese, and a child who takes real pleasure in characters from an early age has a great advantage in the years of Chinese study ahead. We hope these little games help your child enjoy Chinese — and come to love it.
