During the pandemic Hong Kong's talent shortage grew steadily more acute, and the government responded with a whole series of measures to attract talent — the investment migration scheme was even revived after an eight-year suspension. A good number of mainland families have since moved here. Once the children start at a Hong Kong school, however, not being able to read Traditional characters becomes a real headache for many mothers. So how can we help a young child recognise more characters? Here are three simple tricks.
Three approaches are widely endorsed by parents and teachers alike: breaking characters into components, building up a stock of characters around a shared component, and character-recognition games.
Grow the character count from a shared component by pairing it with others
Take one component as a base and combine it with others to build new characters. This widens a child's stock of characters and at the same time helps them grasp what those characters mean. The radical 女 (woman), for example, yields 媽 (mother), 姊 (elder sister), 婦 (married woman) and 奶 (grandmother, milk) — all of them connected with women. Learning by branching out in this way lets children link characters together into a network of words, and makes characters of related meaning far easier to take in.
A Note from the Editor
In learning Chinese, recognising characters is the foundation, and the earlier a child begins the better. We hope these suggestions make it easy to teach characters at home and to get your child ready for the move up to primary school.
